An Open Heart for Mother’s Day

AnOpenHeart

Oh, how I love this soon-to-be-retired stamp set called An Open Heart!  It’s just perfect for so many occasions!  I’m posting this today as a Mother’s Day card idea; as a mom, I can’t imagine any more touching sentiment to receive from your child!  But also think anniversary or sympathy cards.

        • Stamping on designer paper is one of my favorite looks.  I’ve used the Farmers Market Designer Series Paper here.  This packet surprises me all the time.  At first look, all you see is fruit and vegetables, but the flip side are some of the nicest neutral papers!  This paper pack is also due to be retired.
        • I doubt that there’s a bird that is colored this way in “real life” but of course as stampers, we have to match our cardstock theme, right?!  I’m also honoring our retiring In Colors – Hello Honey, Lost Lagoon and Mossy Meadow (used as the thin border behind the designer paper).  Watercolor paper is definitely the choice to feature this pretty bird and watercoloring with the Aqua Painter and stamp pads.  Circle Framelits create the backdrop; another retiring product!
        • Also retiring are the Antique Brads – I’ve loved working with these pretty accents!
        • As I created this card, a robin is building her nest right outside my window, busy carrying all sorts of plant material and tucking it in place.  It reminded me of the Linen Thread tied around my card – the perfect texture for a natural look.
        • I swear I won’t every be able to get rid of my Envelope Liner Framelits, even though they’re retiring.  They give such a perfectly coordinated card and really hits it home on the creativity.  Be sure to pick up yours if you don’t already own them – they are truly a “must have” for all of your cards!

Featuring Two new Sale-A-Bration products

Flowering Fields2

Flowering Fields1

I have two cards for you today – two different versions of the same thing – because I couldn’t make up my mind!  Both cards feature the Wildflower Fields Designer Paper coupled with Flowering Fields stamp set, two of the wonderful choices this year with Stampin’ Up!’s Sale-A-Bration promotion.

New to Sale-A-Bration?  Here’s the deal: for every $50 you spend (before tax and shipping), you get a FREE Sale-A-Bration product. That means it’s the perfect time to purchase those products you’ve had your eye on while earning more products for free.  Want more bang for your bucks?  Spend at least $250 and receive FIVE Sale-A-Bration products free, as well as $25 more in additional host benefits, making it a minimum of $50!

I’ve had several people ask me lately how I come up with designs.  I have to admit, every single card I design, I start with a good, solid layout.  There are many great online sources, including Splitcoast Stampers, Mojo Monday and Pinterest, as well as your own Stampin’ Up! catalogs, both past and present.  And did you know that you can click on the button in my navigation bar that says “Galleries” and see at a glance every single project I’ve ever posted?!  Then just use one of my layouts.  You’ll be off to a great start and only have to choose your colors, DSP, stamps and accessories then plug them into place.

  • The beautiful color scheme is Blackberry Bliss, Calypso Coral, Hello Honey, Lost Lagoon and Old Olive.  How rich and classy!
  • Adjusting the opening direction changes up your cards a bit.  The first card opens at the side so your cardstock base is 4-1/4″ x 11″.  The second card flips up from bottom to top, so the card base is cut at 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″.
  • I’ve combined Thoughts & Prayers stamp set – a tried and true one for sympathy and get well cards.  The colors work well for this purpose.
  • I’ve kept the accents simple – a couple of White Perfect Accents and Candy Dots, along with a Linen Thread double bow held in place with a Glue Dot.
  • Be sure to use Dimensionals to give more interest to your different pieces!

One of the images is colored in with Stampin’ Write Markers in Hello Honey, Old Olive and Calypso Coral.

The other image is colored in with a White Gel Pen.  Just let it dry completely before handling so that you don’t get the little white smudge like I did!

Lotus Blossom Sympathy

Lotus Blossom Sympathy

The Lotus Blossom stamp set from the Stampin’ Up! 2015 Sale-A-Bration Brochure has been one of the most popular stamp sets ever!  People are falling in love with three-step stamping and it’s so easy to create such a stunning result.  And it can be yours completely free during the month of March with an order of at least $50 in Stampin’ Up! product.

Unfortunately I needed yet another sympathy card this week when a good customer’s brother passed away unexpectedly.  I usually have these cards on hand, but I wanted something super special for her, and she loves the Lotus stamp set.

  • I’m finding that rather than stamping the lotus blossom from dark to light, I’m stamping from light to dark.  It seems easier to me to line up the petals.  For my 3 colors for this card, I began with off stamping Rich Razzleberry (ink up your stamp, stamp on a scrap piece of paper then onto your cardstock).  Step 2 was using Rich Razzleberry full strength, and Step 3 I used Blackberry Bliss ink.
  • I used Pear Pizzazz cardstock as my card base and as the base for my main image.  The Mossy Meadow Ribbon coordinated nicely, and I used Mossy Meadow Ink to stamp the sentiment from A Dozen Thoughts stamp set.
  • Moonlight Designer Series Paper Stack contains this pretty Blackberry Bliss print.
  • Be sure to use Dimensionals to add depth to your card.  I popped up the main image and also the sentiment with this handy adhesive.
  • Gorgeous Grunge stamp set created the splatters in the background.  This is definitely the most used stamp set on my shelf!

A Mother’s Love

Mother's Love Sympathy

A very dear friend lost her mom last week.  I know all too well how painful it is to say goodbye to one of the most important people in your life, and so I wanted to make a very special card for her.  While the Stampin’ Up! 2015 Occasions Catalog stamp set called Mother’s Love is meant to use to celebrate Mother’s Day in May, I thought it was perfect for a sympathy card.

  • My card began with wanting that beautiful font and saying to really stand out.  I stamped it in Rich Razzleberry ink and then cut it out with an Oval Framelit and Big Shot.
  • Next was fitting in the stamped flower – I stamped it with Memento Black Ink and colored it in with Rich Razzleberry and Wild Wasabi Blendabilities.
  • The Wild Wasabi Cotton Twine from the Painted Blooms collection worked really well for my card.
  • The Stacked With Love Designer Paper isn’t just for Valentine’s Day.  I had several sheets left over and just used the black and white side to add a touch of print to the card and to line my envelope using the Envelope Liner Framelit and Big Shot.

Mother's Love Sympathy inside

  • Adding a little something to the inside really gives your card a finished look.  It also creates an easier space to write a message when using dark cardstock.

Sometimes simple is better, especially with a sympathy card.  I hope my friend knows how much my thoughts are with her during this really difficult time.

Something to Say and I Like You

Something to Say

I have a quick & Easy card for you today – something you can create in just a few minutes, but I think it packs a punch!  Unfortunately, there are many times these encouraging words could be a comfort to those around you – sympathy, illness, any of life’s challenges.

  • I’ve combined three stamp sets – Something to Say for the beautiful sentiment, I Like You (a hostess-exclusive stamp set) and Party Pennants, a stamp fro the July 2013 Paper Pumpkin kit for the Old Olive background behind the sentiment.
  • I know you’re waiting patiently (or not!) for the release of the Stampin’ Up! Blendabilities Markers!  Let me tell you, they’re worth the wait!  There’s never been an easier way to color in images!  I used Rich Razzleberry, Old Olive, Coastal Cabana and Daffodil Delight to color in my pretty flower image.  I created another card using the same stamp and color scheme HERE.  Word on the street is that they should be available later in June or possibly into July, so sit tight – they’re coming!

Sending Good Thoughts

Good Thoughts

Too Kind is the perfect stamp set to show off the coordination of using Calypso Coral and Crisp Cantaloupe together.  In this beautiful 2-step stamping stamp set, there are separate stamps for both shades in the flowers, and a separate stamp for the Pear Pizzazz stems.  And there are two wonderful sentiments as well.

  • I've used Baked Brown Sugar as the card base.  Next layer is Calypso Coral cardstock run through the Big Shot using the Honeycomb Embossing Folder.  A 1"x5-1/2" piece of Whisper White cardstock is also run through the Big Shot using one of the Finishing Touches Edgelits.
  • Next I added a piece of Calypso Coral 3/4" Chevron Ribbon – you're going to want this ribbon in every color!  It's so versatile and trendy.
  • Begin any 2-step stamping with the lightest color.  In this case, I stamped the Pear Pizzazz stems first so that I could properly place the flowers on top.  Then I stamped the larger images in Crisp Cantaloupe followed by the smaller images in Calypso Coral.  Don't worry too much about how perfectly you line them up.  Just stamp the center over the stem and it'll look great!  This is the easiest watercoloring you'll ever do!
  • Sentiment is stamped over the flower stem with Baked Brown Sugar ink.
  • I felt like the corner needed a little somethin' so did some paper piercing.  It's so simple when you have the Essentials Paper-Piercing Grid to help line up all the holes!

So Sorry

So Sorry 1

There have been some sad times for some people in my life right now, so I made this card for a couple of friends.  It features the new Pistachio Pudding card stock and ink, which I'm having a devil of a time photographing true to color!  Believe me, it's much prettier "in person"!  Other colors are Wisteria Wonder, now taking its permanent place in our Subtles Collection, and Rich Razzleberry, which is always my "go to" color.

I'm also featuring two stamp sets – So Sorry for the sentiment and Best of Flowers for the image.  If you haven't heard about the "Best of 25 Years Series" stamp sets, click HERE.  Collect the series and earn free stamp sets!

  • It's easy to use an embossing folder on every single card I make, especially when there's such a great variety to choose from!  Here I've used the Fancy Fans embossing folder on the Pistachio Pudding card stock.
  • Rich Razzleberry 1/4" Stitched Ribbon and the Delicate Details Lace Tape combine to give good accents to this card.
  • Adorning Accents Edgelit cuts the scalloped card stock.

So Sorry 2

Use a variety of coordinating sentiment stamps to add additonal words to your "So Sorry" greeting, or simply leave them off.

Sympathy Cards for Church Ministry

I've been working with a couple of groups of wonderful women involved in church card ministries.  It's been so much fun creating cards together that they'll send to members of the church facing difficulties in their lives.  This first card uses Nature Walk stamp set stamped in Night of Navy, with Daffodil Delight accents colored in with a Stampin' Write Marker.  Sentiment is from Blessings from Heaven stamp set.

This card is pretty much CASEd from the Idea Book & Catalog, with the exception of changing the word image to something a bit simpler and using Petite Pairs stamp set for the sentiment.  Image is from Thoughts & Prayers stamp set; I added punched flowers using Itty Bitty Punch Pack and Pearls to the centers.

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:
Item No.113252 Thoughts & Prayers $25.95
Item No. 123050 Blessings from Heaven wood $18.95 OR

Life’s Natural Rhythm

A couple of days ago, I got sad news that a good friend and fellow stamper had lost her mother-in-law.  On that very same day, I received the joyous news that another friend and stamper had given birth to her very first child–a little girl.  I'm reminded again of the rhythm of life – one life gone, a new life begins.

Today I'm honoring a life well lived by Kathleen “Peg” Christensen, who had a remarkable 93 years with her friends and family.  Here's a special card for her son Alan and daughter-in-law Judy.

Because it was Alan's mom, I wanted a decidedly masculine card and Splitcoast's color challenge offered just the right pallette.  I used Bravo Burgundy, Basic Gray and Whisper White, with just a touch of Crushed Curry.  Lovely as a Tree stamp set seems my "go-to" stamp set for masculine cards.  I never get tired of it!  The sentiment is from Thoughts and Prayers stamp set; it's stamped in Basic Gray Classic Ink, as are the trees, and punched out with the Large Oval Punch, layered with Bravo Burgundy card stock punched with a Scallop Oval Punch.  A piece of Bravo Burgundy 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon knotted and wrapped around the Basic Gray card stock completes this simple card.

I'll get to work on a special card for that darling baby girl and share it with you soon!

THINGS YOU'LL NEED:

Item No. 115026 Lovely as a Tree   $27.95
Item No. 113252 Thoughts & Prayers   $25.95
Item No. 114889 Scallop Oval Punch   $15.95
Item No. 107305 Large Oval Punch   $15.95
Item No. 109053 Bravo Burgundy 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon   $7.95
